Montauban is a busy market town spread over both banks of the River Tarn. Built as a fortified town in the 12th century it was converted into a protestant stronghold during the religion wars. The Pont Vieux which spans the Tarn with seven arches dates from the 14th century, near the bridge is one of the town’s most important buildings: the Ingres Museum which contains drawings by Ingres and works by the sculptor Bourdelle. Local activities include water parks, quad biking, horse riding, canoeing, ballooning, flying and rafting. The Pyrénées mountains are about 90 minute’s drive away with its beautiful villages, scenery and skiing in winter. The nearest international airport is Toulouse (British Airways, Easyjet, FlyBe) which is 50 kms away. FlyBe also operate from Bergerac which is approx 80-90 minutes away to the north and you can catch a flight from Exeter, Leeds Bradford, Southampton, Edinburgh and Birmingham.
