“Escape” Chateau Project to Finish in SW France
Originally posted on & updated on 13th October, 2024This lovely and spacious stone chateau with land to be finished renovating is a rare opportunity being offered for sale in the Tarn area in southwest France.
The property is well placed strategically being situated close to a village with amenities near Mazamet in the glorious Tarn department, with the main (and famous) cities of Carcassonne, Toulouse and Béziers all in fairly easy access.
The chateau is “dans son jus” with all its original charm and character to be seem everywhere you look. There are many features such as the high ceilings, wooden beams, several marble fireplaces, three staircases, chestnut paneling, old tiles and typical architecture of that period, and a secret passage to the servants quarters.
The château offering over 500 sq.m of living area is on three floors and needs to be upgraded except the roof which has been restored. Upgrades include roof (full renovation of main roof in last 8 years, and full renovation of single story roof in last 10 years), replacement insulated floor for grand salon and new electrics in significant portion of building.
The ground floor is slightly larger due to main kitchen and workshop. There are 5 reception rooms in total; a large reception room with refurbished floor and insulation installed underneath. This rooms also features a unique marble fireplace with picture window and electric blind above. A recent wood-burning stove installed.
There are 8 fireplaces in total, several of which are marble and 3 are in current use. There’s currently 1 operational bathroom plus 2 further operational WCs. There is potential for an additional bathroom/shower room and 2 or 3 ensuite bathrooms. The entire drainage and heating system needs updating, with old radiators in some rooms.
Stepping outside the chateau is the beautiful park with woods, old trees and a meadow. The swimming pool is large (15m x 6m) with a deep end graduating to a shallow end for paddling and entrance steps, with large terrace areas surrounding it. There’s a store for garden tractor, wood splitter, lawnmower and a stone outbuilding previously used as stable, for renovation.
This chateau “semi” project would be ideal for a large family (or 2) or a B&B project. The price of 595,000 euros includes the estate fees, and converted to sterling it’s around £522,000 or $715,000 if you prefer the dollar equivalent.
This chateau has now been sold, but feel free to register to receive alerts of new and future châteaux as they come to the market.
