Income Tax Return for 2022

Do you live in France and need to declare your income in France for last year? If you were residing in France in 2022, you must complete and submit your annual tax return for income and gains made in that financial year. In 2023, the system is changing, online reporting is compulsory if your home is connected to the Internet.

Do I Have to Submit an Income Tax Return in France?

The French income tax return for 2022 covers the period running from 1st January 2022 to 31st December 2022. You would need to file a tax return if you are a French tax resident or if you have received income from French sources.

How do I File my French Tax return?

Your income tax return can now be submitted online by logging in on your personal portal on the official government website. One of the main benefits of this automatic system is that you don’t need to do anything if your situation hasn’t changed from the previous year.

What is the Deadline to File my Tax Return?

The deadline date to submit the tax return depends on the département where you live.

  • For non-residents the deadline is 25 May 2023
  • For departments 1 to 19 the deadline is 25 May 2023
  • For departments 20 to 54 the deadline is 1 June 2023
  • For departments 55 and above the deadline is 8 June 2023

What if I don’t Have Internet at Home ?

If you don’t have access to the internet, you can use a paper form to submit your tax return. Paper tax returns are only available for taxpayers unable to file their declaration online. Understandably the deadline for paper returns is an earlier date at 22 May 2023.

Early Teething Problems

Please note that taxpayers are allowed to make amendments to the income tax return up to mid-December 2023. We also understand this new online system has run into a few minor issues and bugs that should have been resolved or will be soon. Should you experience such problems, simply report your problem(s) using the website’s online messaging service. For more complicated tax related issues, talk to our tax experts in London.
